Last week, my daughter and I walked through our yard with grandbaby Finn. She commented on the wild violets that have popped up everywhere this year. Last night, when I made my weekly phone call to my parents, my mom mentioned that they had a huge population of wild violets. She had noticed that the neighbor’s yards were filling up with them also, and she said, “I know I am the cause of their yards being full of wild violets.” Years ago she thought the violets were pretty growing in my Uncle Pineywood’s yard (real name Lester). She dug some up and took them home.
I told her that my yard was full also, because years ago, I thought they were pretty growing in my mom’s yard, so I dug some up and took them home.
She went on to tell about a TV program that said this is a good year for the wild violet, but if you don’t like them, they are very hard to get rid of. I firmly stated I didn’t want to get rid of them. They are so pretty I wouldn’t care if my whole yard were covered.
We went on to discuss that you can eat them in salads, and dip them in sugar water and use them for decorations on cakes or cupcakes, or just make a bouquet of them.
When my daughter and I were talking last week, I told her where they came from… originally from Uncle Pineywood’s yard. She commented, some people pass on furniture, houses, traits, money, but our family passes on plants.
I have my grandmother’s irises, my dad’s white fringe tree, my mom’s crepe myrtle tree, my uncle’s violets and more. I have passed some on to my children and will pass more on, as time goes by.
When I walk through my yard, I think of my grandmother, mom, dad, uncle, family, because their presence surrounds me in the plants growing in my yard.

What inheritance are you passing on to your children?
When my parents are gone, and I am gone… in the spring… our yards will still proclaim that we were once here. But that is not the most important inheritance to pass on. The most important inheritance involves teaching our children about God, Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins, and leading them to obtain salvation and a relationship with our Holy Father.
Then they inherit eternal life with us, and eventually, we will all be together in heaven one day, living out the inheritance that our Holy Father passes to us.
